A dedicated business woman, bringing a wealth of knowledge in the accounting industry. Alex established Booksmart in 2014 as a sole operator and the business has grown at a rapid rate since, moving offices three times for more space.
Alex had an interest in commerce from a young age and knew she wanted to work with numbers. What initially started as saving pocket money, doing paper runs and her first job at McDonalds grew into an interest of understanding how to manage personal finances. Alex became a full time manager at McDonalds after leaving school. From there, Alex completed Certificates III and IV in Business Administration while she worked in a local construction company.
Alex completed her Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Newcastle and Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) through Kaplan Professional whilst working in hotels and restaurants throughout Newcastle and by the end of her degree she also had 4 years of management accounting experience at a local firm specialising in the hospitality industry and finished an accounting traineeship and was quickly promoted to intermediate accountant.
Working at the ground level of local businesses has provided her with a greater understanding of day to day procedures in these industries and incorporating this with her accounting knowledge has now helped her ability in assisting businesses as a whole unit.
Alex was inspired by her parents hard work and dedication to their family and following her life motto ‘your comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there’, she decided change was required. It was the right time and Booksmart was born. Booksmart Accounting Solutions went from being a small operation to the growing business it is today.
Alex believes the bookkeeping industry is in the middle of a great automation evolution that allows business advisors to spend more time adding value to clients, which is what Alex loves to do. She has extensive experience in Xero and MYOB accounting software and loves to show clients that bookwork isn’t so scary or time consuming, it can actually be very easy.
A proud Novocastrian, Alex has been honored to be featured in the Hunter Business Review’s ‘Women in Business’ issue in 2015, as a Hunter Young Gun for Hunter Headline in 2017 and on Novabuilt Marketing also in 2017. When she wasn’t working on her business or being featured in magazines, Alex dedicated her time as the Treasurer of the Hunter Young Professionals from 2014 to 2017, a not for profit organisation that provides the framework for young professionals in Newcastle and the Hunter region to network, engage, and grow in such a way that the leaders of the new generation are developing their skills outside of the workplace to grow as individuals and members of the community. Alex was featured as the ‘Member of month‘ in March 2017 for Hunter Young Professional’s. Alex’s hard work to date and contribution to the community was recognised in 2016, when she was a finalist for the Young Entrepreneur of the year at the Hunter Region Business Excellence awards.
